A newbie to the DDS pond

Hey there! I am Apurva Dabak, your DDS mentor if “D.D.S” are the words that tickle you and are all you dream about. In this blog, I am going to share all the initial information about DDS. If you are someone who wants to explore this option for you after you have been trained in your own country, this blog is for you.

What is DDS?

Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) is a doctorate program of the dental profession. Around the world, these are equivalent to BDS, DDS (like in South Korea), etc. Various specializations in dentistry are called “residencies” in the United States. These residencies may or may not be associated with an MS degree - Master of Science in Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, etc. It varies from university to university.

What is the IDP or Advanced Standing Program?

A program specifically designed for foreign dental graduates who wish to obtain dental licensure in the United States is called IDP - International Dental Program or International Dental Pathway, Advanced Standing Program for Foreign Trained Dentists, etc. Each university has come up with a title for their program.

First Steps

Following are some of the initial steps you will need to brainstorm before you start applying to the DDS program.

  • Profile building strategy

  • Which schools to apply for DDS

  • Entrance exams like TOEFL, ADAT, GRE, etc

  • Statement of purpose

  • Evaluation letters

  • Financial security

The entire DDS process is lengthy and strenuous. It tests your patience, perseverance, and hard work. Discipline, time management, focus, and passion will help you get through any hurdles that could come along the way of achieving DDS!
